About: Underground Jiu Jitsu:
Underground Jiu Jitsu is south Florida's Marcelo Garcia affiliate academy located in the city of Davie FL. The gym was formed by Marcelo's south Florida team when Marcelo and Henrique Rezende relocated from Florida to NYC. Our instructors have spent many years of training with Marcelo, and continue to study his techniques and style of Jiu Jitsu.
Underground Jiu Jitsu was born of the inspiration from a Jiu Jitsu legend, and its instructors' mission is to pass on the knowledge and skills that they have acquired from Marcelo, so that others in South Florida can benefit from Marcelo’s unique brand of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
About: Marcelo Garcia
Marcelo Garcia burst onto the grappling scene in 2003 when, as an alternate to the largest grappling championship in the world, ADCC, he submitted every competitor he faced on his way to the gold medal and being named the most technical grappler in the tournament.
Since that time, Marcelo has become the first ADCC competitor to win the event 4 times as well as the middle weight Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championship 5 times. He is recognized in the world of grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as one of the greatest champions of all time.
From his New York City Gym, Marcelo had created a unique brand of Jiu Jitsu that has champions from all over the world traveling to New York to train with him. Unlike many Martial Arts associations and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu organizations, Marcelo is very particular about his instructors, and wants to ensure that his affiliate gyms understand the style of Jiu Jitsu that he practices and teaches. Because of that, Marcelo has only appointed a few in the world as affiliate gyms. We are fortunate to have two instructors who have trained with Marcelo and have studied his style and techniques for many years.
It is our goal at Underground Jiu Jitsu to pass on the knowledge that Marcelo has passed on to us, and to teach his unique style of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to our students.
About: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a very technical, ground based self-defense system and sport.
In the early part of the 20th Century, Japanese Judo/Jiu Jitsu Master, Mitsuyo Maeda "Count Koma" visited Brazil. While there, he began teaching traditional Japanese Juijitsu to Carlos Gracie, the son of his friend, Gastao Gracie. After Maeda left Brazil, the Gracie Family continued to train and refine the techniques that they had learned from the Japanese legend.
Carlos' brother, Helio, found many of the techniques difficult to master because of his size. He only weighed 135 lbs and had been sickly as a child. He began to refine many of the techniques to fit his small frame, and after many years, developed a system that would enable him to defeat opponents much larger and stronger than himself.
Throughout the 20th Century, the Gracie family continued to refine their system by challenging many fighters from other styles in "no holds barred" matches in Brazil. Finally, in the 1980's, Helio's son Rorian, moved to the United States where he began teaching the Gracie Family's style of Jiu Jitsu in Southern California.
In 1993, Rorian created the Ultimate Fighting Championship, a "No Holds Barred" tournament which was designed to showcase the Gracie family's style of martial arts in the United States. His brother, Royce Gracie, competed against larger, stronger opponents from many different styles, submitting every opponent and changing the face of martial arts throughout the world.
Today, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, is the most successful sports fighting organization in the world, and Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, which evolved from the early UFC events featuring the Gracie family, is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and many other countries.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is arguably the best self defense system ever invented for smaller, weaker opponents to be able to survive violent attacks and defeat larger adversaries.
About: Mixed Martial Arts
Mixed Martial Arts is simply the combining of several martial arts to create one fighting style. Today, a successful Mixed Martial Artist is able to fight in all three ranges: On his feet-both kicking and punching, in a clinch, and on the ground.
We have champions in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Competitions teaching our classes. So, if you want to train for fitness, for fun, or to become a champion, Underground Jiu Jitsu is the place to be in South Florida.
About: Sports Based Training
Sports based training is simply training against a resisting opponent in a sports based training environment. There is nothing new about sports based training, as boxers, kick boxers, and wrestlers have been training this way forever. But in contrast, traditional Martial Arts training may involve some sparring, but much of it is done in the form of katas (forms) and one step movements, where the opponent allows his training partner to complete the technique with no resistance.
Many of the instructors at Underground Jiu Jitsu have backgrounds in traditional Martial Arts, so we understand that there are many benefits that can be achieved from traditional martial arts. But it is our belief that for physical fitness and for realistic self defense training, you need to train against a resisting opponent.
For this reason, the classes offered at Underground Jiu Jitsu are based on sports based training methods which involve sparring or grappling with an opponent. The training is conducted in a safe, fun-filled atmosphere, and you will train at your own level. But we believe the benefits of sports based training far outweigh any other type of training for fitness or self defense.
